Opening up the world with Grégoire D’Ablon

October 3 to October 14, 2022

Grégoire d’Ablon, Rouvrir le monde – Un été culturel, 2022
Grégoire d’Ablon lives and works in Arles. After studying agricultural engineering, he will graduate from the École nationale supérieure de la photographie (Arles) in 2019. His research into eugenics and his projects that challenge landscape categorizations and territorial planning (“Sites remarquables à enjeux multiples”, “Tour à tour”) testify to the artist’s interest, if not necessity, in understanding and manipulating selection processes. Grégoire d’Ablon questions the origin of the photographic gesture, as well as artistic non-production as a work of art (“Certificat de non-productivité” and “Je ne fais plus d’image”).

Hosted by: École Saint Martin, Mougins (CM2 and CE2) Duration of activity: 12 hours
The project: During his two-week residency in Mougins (06), Grégoire D’Ablon carried out seven workshops with two groups of 16 pupils during extracurricular time between 12pm and 2pm. The aim of these workshops was to rediscover a familiar, shared space – the playground – by creating different types of images. Using all the different images produced by the group, the students created a composite collage image including all the productions made during the workshops. In this way, from a multitude of productions and proposals, the students propose their own image of the playground, thereby creating a new sense of place. In the process, students will have manipulated everything that characterizes photography (sampling, moment, framing, editing…) without ever actually making one.
