Grégoire d’Ablon lives and works in Arles. After studying agricultural engineering, he graduated from the École nationale supérieure de la photographie (Arles) in 2019. His research on eugenics and his projects that challenge landscape categorizations and territorial development (“Sites remarquables à enjeux multiples”, “Tour à tour”) testify to the artist’s interest, if not necessity, in understanding and manipulating selection processes. Grégoire d’Ablon questions the origin of the photographic gesture, as well as non-artistic production as art (“Certificat de non-productivité” and “Je ne fais plus d’image”).

Host Structure: École Saint Martin, Mougins (CM2 and CE2) – Activity duration: 12 hours
The project: During his two-week residency in Mougins (06), Grégoire D’Ablon conducted seven workshops with two groups of 16 students during after-school hours between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. The aim of these workshops was to rediscover a familiar and common space -the playground- through the creation of different types of images. Using all the various images produced by the group, the students created a composite collage image incorporating all the productions made during the workshops. Thus, from a multitude of productions and proposals, the students offers their own image of the playground, thereby creating a new spirit of place. In this process, the students manipulated everything that characterizes photography (selection, moment, framing, editing…) without ever taking a photograph in the literal sense.
