Kwame Brathwaite: Black is Beautiful
In the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s, Kwame Brathwaite used his photographs to popularize the political slogan “Black Is beautiful”. This monograph—the first ever dedicated to Brathwaite’s remarkable career—tells the story of a key, but under-recognized, figure of the second Harlem Renaissance. Inspired by the writings of activist and black nationalist Marcus Garvey, Brathwaite, along with his older brother, Elombe Brath, founded the African Jazz Arts Society and Studios (AJASS) and the Grandassa Models (1962). AJASS was a collective of artists, playwrights, designers, and dancers; Grandassa Models was a modeling troupe for black women, founded to challenge white beauty standards. From stunning studio portraits of the Grandassa Models to behind-the-scenes images of Harlem’s artistic community, including Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, and Miles Davis, this book offers a long-overdue exploration of Brathwaite’s life and work

Comrade Sisters: Women of the Black Panther Party
Many of us have heard those three words: Black Panther Party. Some know the party’s history as a movement for the social, political, economic and spiritual betterment of blacks and colored natives, but to this day, few know the story of the party’s backbone: women.
It’s estimated that six out of ten Panther Party members were women. While these remarkable women, of all ages and backgrounds, regularly made headlines by agitating, protesting and organizing, offstage, these same women were building communities and implementing social justice, providing food, housing, education, healthcare, and much more. Comrade Sisters tells their story.
The exhibition devoted to Stephen Shames – Comrade sisters / les Panthères noires, presented at the Centre de la photographie de Mougins from June 28 to October 06, 2024, was the first part of the African American trilogy.

Wattstax. August 20, 1972, a black pride
On Sunday August 20, 1972, the Wattstax festival commemorated the seventh anniversary of the Watts revolt. Organized by Stax, the soul and funk label that introduced Otis Redding to the world, the 110,000-strong event at the Los Angeles Coliseum marked the triumph of black pride after decades of oppression.
Five hours of music combining blues, rhythm’n’blues, soul and funk, featuring the likes of Isaac Hayes and Carla Thomas. This historic concert bears witness to a united and joyful fervor.
This chapter in the history of great black music is recounted and enriched by an account of the events that preceded Wattstax: the chain of racist acts, the advent of Black Power and the Stax version of soul music.

Revue Afrikadaa, 2025
Revue AFRIKADAA, Politics of Sound #2
Created by a collective of artists, AFRIKADAA is an interactive contemporary art magazine. Because it’s time to redefine the relationships between territories, ideas and artistic movements, AFRIKADAA is a magazine that brings another perspective to the contemporary art scene by telling the stories and trajectories of artist communities beyond the boundaries of the market.
The “Politics of Sound” theme invites us to explore the role of music as a social and political force, an often overlooked but incredibly powerful soundtrack to our culture and society. Eschewing the visible, music is capable of reflecting, perceiving and hearing the world in a more accurate way, masked by the gaze.
In this new issue, the magazine proposes a captivating archaeology of musical sounds and movements as impulses, rhythms, convulsions, riots, uprisings, fluctuations and beats of social, political and cultural transformations.
This issue is committed to questioning the multiplicity of musical currents that have marked struggles for freedom, civil rights or pan-African movements.

Seeing clearly in the jumble of photos
Les Filles de la Photo’s white paper on best practices is the fruit of a wide-ranging process of questioning shared with all players in the photography ecosystem in an original, introspective form. It is the culmination of a rigorous consultation with 33 photographers in the form of individual interviews, and 100 players in the sector at 10 round tables.
Revealing the misunderstandings and mutual incomprehension that undermine talent and project selection processes, this collaborative work reveals the realities and challenges – often poorly understood – of the various stakeholders. It shares virtuous examples and tangible solutions to defuse surprising situations in ten key areas of photography.
Necessary, critical without being moralistic, this white paper compiles recommendations and advice for photographers and decision-makers in the sector. Its ambition is to encourage, in a benevolent and straightforward way, best practices between the various players in the ecosystem, and to make relations more fluid.

The Women Who Changed Art Forever
These women changed art forever. Told in the form of a colorful graphic novel, this is the story of four pioneers of feminist art: Judy Chicago, Faith Ringold, Ana Mendieta and the Guerilla Girls.
Each of them left her mark in her own way. Judy Chicago made us re-evaluate the female body, Faith Ringold taught us that feminism is for everyone, Ana Mendieta was a martyr to violence against women, while the Guerilla Girls took the fight to the male-dominated museum. This graphic novel tells each of their stories in their own unique style.

Suitable for children aged 5 and over and entirely handmade by Emma Tarea in her studio in Nice, the small kit (15 x 15 cm) contains 7 ready-to-use sheets, the maxi kit (30 x 30 cm) 6 sheets, and both come with instructions.
