Fushikaden. Issei Suda

Issei Suda (1940-2019) is one of the leading figures in post-war Japanese photography. To mark his first exhibition in France, the Centre d’art GwinZegal is reissuing Fushikaden, his most emblematic book published in 1978. After working for several years as a photographer with an avant-garde theatre company, from 1970 onwards he set out to criss-cross rural Japan, its traditional celebrations and cultural festivals, to photograph his compatriots and capture the changes in a country gripped by unprecedented growth. Far from Tokyo and the big cities that fascinated photographers at the time, Suda captured moments of everyday life with subtlety and love: faces, attitudes and details that sketched out the meeting of the old world with the new.

Femmes photographes japonaises. Des années 1950 à nos jours

Rencontres d’Arles 2024.

An event book that fills a major historiographical gap.
The book highlights the work of Japanese women photographers from the 1950s to the present day. While recognition of the Japanese photography scene has mainly benefited male photographers since the 1970s, many women artists have played a key role in the development of the medium, with undeniable virtuosity. Through more than 500 images, including a vast selection of photographs, facsimiles of books and an anthology of texts, this book reveals the immensity of what has been concealed and constitutes a critical and joyful enrichment of the history of Japanese photography.

Yûichi Yokoyama collection, published by la Matière

Eleven volumes
Price: from €8 to €32

Founded in early 2003, Éditions Matière operates in the fields of comics, visual arts and theory through four collections. The “Imagème” collection publishes works in comics and comics-related fields, each in its own genre, with a focus on clarity of line, a demand for minimalism, and, tying it all together, the primacy of form over substance – of presentation over representation. Drawings published by the strip, the works in the ‘Imagème’ collection aim to constitute an original corpus of texts-in-images.

Born in 1967 in Miyazaki Prefecture, Yûichi Yokoyama lives and works in Yokohama, south of Tokyo. A graduate of Musashino Art University (majoring in oil painting), he initially devoted himself exclusively to painting, before extending his graphic and pictorial research to illustration and then devoting himself primarily to comics – or more precisely to what he calls ‘neo-manga’, thanks to which, he says, in accordance with the title of his first retrospective exhibition at the Kawasaki City Museum: ‘I draw time’.

Travaux publics

Third expanded edition, May 2024
Offset black & white + color section
Nb of pages: 120
Price: €2

In vast stretches of desert, heavy machines are busy breaking rock, crushing or drilling into the ground, building mountains, channelling water, transforming materials, slicing, kneading, compressing, crushing, covering… Following these mechanical devices, individuals, half-participants and half-observers, sometimes gauge these titanic works and are astonished by them, sometimes seem to contribute to them. What is this work? Who orders or directs it? For what purpose? And where are we? Who are these masked and strangely dressed figures? Whatever their nature or status, their ambition seems to reach its peak when, faced with a radically shaped new landscape, placed at the heart of gigantic artefacts, they raise their arms together and suddenly let out cries of pure enthusiasm: ‘Waaaa…’.

In 2004, Yûichi Yokoyama laid the foundations of a world that he would go on to describe tirelessly in his numerous books, including Voyage, Jardin, Explorations, La Terre de glace and, more recently, Plaza, all published by Éditions Matière. This new edition – expanded with three previously unpublished stories and photographs of landscapes and construction sites taken by Yokoyama – celebrates twenty years of Travaux publics.

Baby boom

Novembre 2012
Nb of pages: 184 pages
Price: 23 €

Baby boom is a collection of stories brought to life by two recurring characters, a ‘bird’ (the black-headed animal under whose mask the author likes to imagine himself) and a ‘chick’, engaged, in pairs or in groups, in all kinds of activities typical of childhood: hoops, cubes, swimming, folding, drawing, snacks, building, sandboxes, jumping in puddles…

Drawing vigorously with two colours of felt-tip pen, Yokoyama has left his drawings the freshness of sketches. With their (apparent) speed of execution and colourful contrasts, his plates are an obvious and communicative extension of the frenetic joy of the bird, the chick and their playmates.
A new key to a body of work that is sometimes unfairly regarded as austere, serious and cold, Baby boom is the ultimate book of enthusiasm. For the first time, it exposes one of the artist’s most powerful sources: his childhood.

Jardin

Mai 2009
Nb of pages: 328
Price: 25 €

Through a breach in a wall, a crowd of several hundred people enters the ‘garden’ and gradually discovers this vast forbidden territory made up of a succession of artificial landscapes animated by automated movements. The “garden” is a deserted setting, inhabited only by mechanical devices, rattles, shocks and squeaks, a place without direction or logic that seems to be generated as and when it arouses curiosity. It’s a place that probably never ends, dedicated to the unheard of, to the extraordinary, to invention…

The Women Who Changed Art Forever

These women changed art forever – told in colourful graphic novel form, this is the story of four pioneers of feminist art: Judy Chicago, Faith Ringold, Ana Mendieta, and the Guerilla Girls.

Each made their mark in their own powerful way. Judy Chicago made us reassess the female body, Faith Ringold taught us that feminism is for everyone, Ana Mendieta was a martyr to violence against women, while the Guerilla Girls have taken the fight to the male-dominated museum. This graphic novel tells each of their stories in a unique style.

Kit cartes Cyanotype + Maxi Kit. Emma Tarea

By: Emma Tarea

The cyanotype is an old photographic process invented in 1842. It works by applying a solution directly to the paper to make it photosensitive. The paper is then exposed to the sun’s rays, which give it its blue tint once the image has been rinsed. The parts that have been obscured with objects, negatives or cut-out paper remain white.
Suitable for children aged 5 and over and entirely handmade by Emma Tarea in her studio in Nice, the small kit (15 x 15 cm) contains 7 ready-to-use sheets, the maxi kit (30 x 30 cm) 6 sheets, and both come with instructions.

FORMcard

By : Peter Marigold
FORMcard is a handy, pocket sized card of meltable bio-plastic. Simply drop it in a cup of hot water to make little solutions to everyday problems. When it’s cool it’s really strong like nylon, so you can make solid durable solutions with it, and then you can reheat it again and again to adapt, change and reuse it. Because it’s a convenient card size, you can keep one in your pocket, wallet, kitchen drawer or tool box so that it’s there whenever and wherever it’s needed. A great benefit is that when it’s very hot, it sticks to some other plastics, so you can actually use it to instantly fix say…. a favourite plastic shovel when you are on holiday, or a broken fridge drawer. It’s also bio-degradable, so that at the end of it’s life it can be composted.
